The Punjab government has approved the Faisalabad Metro project, aimed at delivering comfortable and affordable intra-city transport for residents.

During a media briefing, FDA Director General Chaudhry Muhammad Asif announced that initial planning is complete, which included a multi-dimensional survey, sector counts, and a strategic transport framework.

This initiative marks the first major public transport project in Faisalabad. Last week, a consultative workshop led by Punjab Minister for Transport and Mass Transit, Bilal Akbar Khan, took place in Lahore. Representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and various transport officials discussed the administrative and technical aspects of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

International and national experts provided insights into the project’s design, operations, and proposed routes. Asif highlighted the collaboration between the Punjab government and ADB to create a state-of-the-art public transport system in Faisalabad. The BRT will offer a high-capacity, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly bus service, similar to those in Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar.

Mehar Muhammad Ayub, Chief Engineer of FDA, detailed the proposed Metro Bus routes. The first route will connect Kamalpur Motorway Interchange to Samundri Road Bypass, passing through key locations like the General Bus Stand, Red Crescent Chowk, and Novelty Bridge. The second route will extend from Narwala Ada to Satiana Road Fish Farm, while the third will link Jhang Road to Jaranwala Road, with Red Crescent Chowk as the central junction for all routes. Ayub also mentioned plans for feeder routes to ensure comprehensive transport coverage throughout Faisalabad.

Additionally, the Punjab government has approved 100 electric buses to enhance eco-friendly transport options in the city.
